NOT ACTIVE – Principal Scientist (Portfolio Management) – €100,000 – €110,000 basic + 15% bonus

You’ve shown you’re a capable portfolio manager. But it doesn’t matter how robust your reviews are and how balanced your portfolio is if your organisation doesn’t have the resources and long-term commitment to deliver those projects.

In this newly created role, part of a well-respected global pharmaceutical business you’ll have plenty of both those things. So, while you’re making sure the company is doing the right projects, they’ll back up your efforts by doing projects right. Here’s why:

Firstly, you’ll be part of a new, growing team that’s a focal point for the business. The company is investing heavily in a digital transformation of their Innovation Unit (spanning research, pre-clinical development, translational medicine and clinical pharmacology). The aim is to create a well-resourced and highly digitally connected environment. It’s a chance for you to come in and shape things from the very start and in a part of the business that’s brimming with opportunity.

Secondly, you’ll be joining a privately-owned business. This means that decisions are taken for the right reasons, scientifically, ethically and commercially. The company is focused on delivering sustainable healthcare and taking on big challenges in medicine – not trying to keep shareholders happy in the short term. That gives you the freedom to make measured, long-term decisions about the portfolio, and the satisfaction of seeing ideas come to fruition over time.

What’s the role

This is a newly created role in the company’s Digital Sciences unit. There are currently six people in the team – a mix of scientists, researchers, portfolio managers and product owners – with plans to expand that number to ten. Together, the team’s aim is to catalyse the portfolio of products across the value chain, from target identification to early clinical trials.

Essentially, your role is to organise activity around all active initiatives in the portfolio, at the MVP phase: to keep communication flowing and the portfolio moving forward. From day-to-day, that includes:

· Ensuring alignment between the product owners (POs) and leadership team. Conducting portfolio review meetings; reviewing milestones, timelines, available resources.

· Keeping all stakeholders informed of developments: liaising with IT on resources, product maturity and value; keeping decision-makers up to date on budget status; status update presentations, updating the project website, preparing and sharing articles and newsletters

· Developing and refining KPIs and metrics to assess the progress, health and impact of the portfolio. Supplying figures to support budgeting and forecasting.

It’s a role with plenty of variety and visibility – you’ll be working at the intersection of science, data, and technology on a portfolio spanning the entire R&D spectrum. You could be looking at early research, development phases, or helping to accelerate preclinical development. You’ll be building relationships with decision-makers and opening doors for future opportunities.

Ultimately, you’ll be enabling researchers and scientists to discover new therapies in both human and animal health. This is work that makes a difference with products you can be proud of.

What you can add

You don’t need pharma experience but you do need the credibility to talk at a high level with scientific stakeholders. That means you probably have a PhD in natural science, computer science or a related field. Or, you have a Master’s coupled with strong experience in a similar industry.

You definitely have plenty of success in product portfolio management. You have excellent analytical skills, a strong delivery focus and experience of setting KPIs and metrics, ideally in portfolio management.

Personally, you’ll bring an entrepreneurial mindset coupled with the determination and laser-sharp focus to keep pushing to the next milestone.

You’ve shown you can collaborate with and organise stakeholders across multidisciplinary environments. You have excellent communication skills, in English, and ideally, experience working in a similarly diverse, multicultural setting.
