NOT ACTIVE – Lead Data Scientist – €65,000 – €95,000

What are the odds of seeing a job that lines up this perfectly with your interests and ambitions?

Working at the intersection of data science and global esports.

Being part of a fast-growing start-up in a booming industry.

Playing a leading role, solving real-time challenges with huge scope to develop.

What’s the role?

You’ll join a Paris-based business that’s setting the pace in esports data provision. Less than a decade old and employing around 45 people, the company combines data collection, AI, machine learning and deep esports expertise to continually provide bookmakers, fantasy apps and media organisations with the very best esports stats.

You’ll become the senior data scientist in a four-strong team that works on the company’s odds platform. Broadly, the team use deep learning and predictive modelling to generate odds for esports bookmakers.

What makes this job different to typical data science roles is that you’re frequently working with real-time data, sharpening models that track hundreds of live data points from esports matches to deliver reliable real-time odds. It’s a role that will allow you to think on your feet and solve complex problems with multiple moving parts.

You’ll enjoy a refreshingly diverse remit spanning the whole project lifecycle – from scoping to building models and maintaining the end product. You’ll immerse yourself in the latest algorithms in machine learning, deep learning and predictive modelling. And, as the senior team member, you’ll lead new R&D projects, mentor junior colleagues and liaise with other disciplines – for example, helping data engineers to develop MLOps or traders to adjust odds.

What you can add

We’re open-minded about where you’re working now – you don’t need esports or betting experience but if you’re into League of Legends, Overwatch or Dota2, it’s clearly a dream job. The role would also suit a senior data scientist who’s currently working in a fast-moving field such as financial services, trading, or banking, and looking to take on more leadership responsibility. As a guide, we’re looking for as many as possible of the following on your CV:

  • In-depth statistical and mathematics knowledge: distributions, joint distributions, probability modelling, time-series predictions, Bayesian inference, etc.
  • Ideally, a PhD or Masters in statistics, mathematics, data science, computer science, or a related discipline.
  • You’re highly proficient in Python, including the main data science libraries. Knowledge of Cloud tools (GCP, AWS, Azure) is a plus.
  • Experience of working in a start-up or scale-up environment.
  • You’ll have the option of working in the company’s central Paris office (which of course includes a gaming room) or remotely.

About the business

You’ll be part of an ambitious, well-respected scale-up business that’s setting the pace in a booming industry. Esports popularity has seen live viewership reach over 15 million viewers for big events with the betting industry estimated to be worth over $13 billion by 2025.

As for the company culture – you’ll be part of a passionate and skilled team who genuinely enjoy what they do. Employees we spoke to described it as “very open” with none of the “overzealous expectations” found in some start-ups. They’re positive about hybrid and remote working too: “mid-week pizza and games nights have shifted online so the team can stay connected”.
